Have you done any genetic testing from Ancestry.com or 23andMe? I was curious to know what parts of the world were part of my genetic make-up, so I just tried 23andMe this past year. I was honestly so fascinated (and shocked!) by these results;
East Asian & Native American – 54%
European – 29.7%
Sub-Saharan African – 4.7%
Western Asian & North African – 2.1%
Unassigned – 8.8%
Mostly, I was amazed to find that I was 50% Native American, since it was only ever briefly discussed on my dad’s side of the family when I was a child . As silly as this may sound, this has made me feel more connected to my ancestors, as I now have a map of where I came from that I can now follow.
But more so than that, I kept thinking about how far science and technology have come. It’s incredible the way data can be analyzed and aggregated to give us a clearer picture of what we’re seeing – how results can change based on the data received. Because the truth is, just like us, data and technology are always changing and evolving.
It was because of this data, taken from thousands and thousands of other members from 23andMe, that I was able to discover things about myself that I didn’t even know existed. Data is like a family tree; it starts at the roots, but branches out based on how that data is analyzed and aggregated. I can now take this data and research even further into my family’s history.
I share this story because of the power data can have and how it can affect our lives – how these results have now given me a roadmap to where I need to go next in my quest for knowledge. But I wouldn’t know where to go or what to do if this data wasn’t aggregated for me.
There are so many ways technology can help us, thanks to many advancements. It’s awesome to be part of a company that can also help make people’s lives better and easier – that can allow businesses to grow because they now have the data they need to move forward, all thanks to technology. Although my company does not exclusively deal in genetic testing, we encompass a wide variety of other industries like transportation and logistics. When you order your 23andMe kit, you’ll know when it’s going to be delivered because of us. We also keep databases up and running, containing the kind of information that can save lives, grow business and forever shape the future of the company.
In what ways have technology helped you? What do you want technology to do for you next? I’m curious to know!
